| Waste from Consumer Electronics |
| 04.08.09 (2:31 am) [edit] |
When you think about consumer electronics, you may think of equipment you use every day like televisions, the best speaker cables , mobile phones, and personal computers. What you may not even consider is that each year the United States alone generates almost 3 million tons of commodity and electronic waste (or e-waste).
So where does all of that waste go? Well, vast amounts of used electronics such as televisions, HDMI cables , cell phones, and computers are sent to countries such as China, Kenya and India every year. Lower environmental standards and working conditions make processing e-waste more profitable in those countries. Yet e-waste can be dangerously hazardous.
E-waste is no laughing matter. It is a major contributor of toxins and carcinogens in the world. Fast paced technology changes, low initial costs, and actual planned obsolescence have given way to a growing problem around the globe. So get smart and dispose of your e-waste correctly.
